Pumpkinhead (1. 98. Cinemassacre Productions. I really don’t think Pumpkinhead is obscure. It is a gem of a film, not particularly on par with modern horror cult classics like Evil Dead, but it holds its own. The Gate would be more obscure as this, however just as good.
I find Pumpkinhead to be just as traditional a viewing as Candyman and Hellraiser in any modern horror repertoire. That said, I found the tale to be just as captivating as the SFX. The atmosphere and mystery are built right from the opening scenes. The acting overall is sub par, especially from the group of soon to be victims, but the scenes with Harley and Haggis create a spookiness, a perfectly dark setting for the rest of the film. Harley’s kid, is innocent enough and his relationship with his father is so wholesome, that it is hard not to find it tragic. The entire film has this dingy yellow/orange sheen, giving it an almost surreal feel…and during the night, it is an eerie dark blue…I really dig the ambience.
The tale is also somewhat unique, and has that backwoods witchcraft element that should be exploited more in horror. Afterall, witchcraft and Halloween go hand in hand in some circles. Also you can’t get a more primal driving force than revenge, except here it gives us a reason to sympathize right along with Harley, but we can also understand why he would be the one to have to redeem himself, since the moral of the story follows the proverb “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”.

Here’s what he recently told a podcaster: Max Landis (2. The thing I would do with CGI, were I directing this film, would be leg movement, and I would have the entire wolf’s face, back, and body be practical, and then I would fully CGI the legs for organic movements.
If you remake American Werewolf and the transformation scene isn’t practical, you have fucked up. We’ll see if I can do it.
We’ll see if I can pull it off. We’ll see if they even make it. My goal is I feel like all of the best remakes focus on one thing in the original movie, take a lot of the images of the original and then remix that really tightly. With American Werewolf I’m doing that, but I’m also just gonna try and do American Werewolf as best I can. We’ll see. I can’t make promises.” (Reported via Jo.
